Kimi Antonelli's nonchalance about the championship title before the US Grand Prix raised eyebrows at Mercedes. Despite his relaxed attitude, he delivered a stellar performance, keeping his title hopes alive until Mexico.
Kimi Antonelli, the young Mercedes driver, approached the United States Grand Prix with an unexpected mindset. Despite being on the brink of becoming the 2026 F1 World Champion, he claimed he wasn't preoccupied with championship thoughts. Toto Wolff, Mercedes' team boss, shared this surprising detail after Antonelli's impressive performance in Austin.
At just 20 years old, Antonelli had his first opportunity to clinch the title at Circuit of the Americas. While the odds were stacked against him, he nearly pulled it off, winning the race in commanding style. His victory, coupled with Lewis Hamilton's fourth-place finish and George Russell's eighth, ensured that the championship battle would continue to Mexico.
Poised to potentially dethrone Sebastian Vettel as the youngest world champion in F1 history, one might expect title thoughts to dominate Antonelli's mind. Yet, as Wolff recounted to Sky Sports, Antonelli expressed a different perspective. Just before the race, he told Wolff he was simply going to enjoy the ride, adding, "I'm not thinking about the championship at all. Isn't that good? Isn't that funny?"
Antonelli's performance was a testament to his focus and skill, as he kept his cool and delivered a flawless race despite the looming pressure. Opting for a one-stop strategy, he resisted challenges from Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, both of whom were on two-stop plans.
Wolff praised the strategic decisions made by the team, highlighting their choice to stick with the one-stop strategy despite the potential risks. "Strategy has really done a good job today," Wolff remarked. "We discussed that Max could undercut us, but we stayed firm with the decision, saying the one-stop looks like the faster strategy."
With a P9 finish in Mexico, Antonelli could secure the championship, making his calm demeanor in Austin all the more remarkable. As the season draws to a close, all eyes will be on this young talent to see if he can maintain his composure and claim the ultimate prize.
