Aston Martin's tyre technician Mick Fern, affectionately known as 'Biscuit', has passed away after a long career in Formula 1. Lance Stroll and others from the F1 community have shared heartfelt tributes.
Lance Stroll has taken the lead in paying tributes to Mick Fern, Aston Martinâs beloved tyre technician, who passed away following the Hungarian Grand Prix. Known fondly as 'Biscuit', Fern had a remarkable 35-year career in Formula 1, starting in 1999 with the team when it was known as Jordan. He was a familiar presence in the paddock, having rejoined the Silverstone-based team in 2015 and worked closely with Stroll over the last seven seasons.
Due to illness, Fern missed the Hungarian Grand Prix, prompting the team to display a sign outside the garage reading 'Biscuit. Thinking of you'. Sadly, Aston Martin announced on Wednesday that Fern had passed away.
The teamâs social media post honored him as a "true stalwart" respected by all. "The entire team and F1 community extend their thoughts to the family and friends of Mick Fern, affectionately known as Biscuit," they wrote. "He was a loyal and supportive colleague who welcomed everyone warmly, making our travels feel more like home. Biscuit spent 35 years in the paddock, and his warmth and humor will be dearly missed."
Lance Stroll expressed his sorrow, calling Fern "one of a kind." "Seven years of getting my tyres race-ready. Rest easy, Mick," Stroll said. "You always made me laugh in the back of the garage, and you truly were one of a kind. My thoughts are with your family and friends. Youâll be deeply missed."
Esteban Ocon, another driver who worked with Fern at the Silverstone team, described him as "a truly wonderful human being." Ocon added, "I will never forget our time together and all the laughs we shared. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. RIP Biscuit, you legend."
Team ambassador Pedro de la Rosa remarked, "Biscuit, you will always be with us, a legend, a hero, an example for all. Big hug to all the family and friends. RIP."
Former Aston Martin strategist Bernie Collins shared, "Rest in peace Biscuit. Hopefully, you have a good cup of tea on the go. You will be missed, and the paddock is sadder for your absence. #biscuit"
The loss resonated beyond the team, with F1 presenters also joining in the tributes. Rachel Brookes expressed her sorrow, noting Fern's ability to bring smiles to those around him. Ruth Buscombe added, "A truly wonderful human Iâm proud to have called my friend along with so many others in our paddock."
