McLaren's Oscar Piastri Faces 2026 Car Challenges
Oscar Piastri is still adjusting to the 2026 Formula 1 cars, which boast lower downforce and a mix of combustion and electrical power. Despite early setbacks this season, McLaren believes he will show significant improvement in the latter half.
Oscar Piastri, McLaren's promising talent, is still finding his feet with the 2026 Formula 1 cars, according to team principal Andrea Stella. These new machines are quite a departure from what drivers used to grapple with, featuring reduced downforce, narrower tyres, and a balanced blend of internal combustion and electrical power.
Piastri showed potential by leading part of the Hungarian Grand Prix, yet his season has been a rollercoaster. Two podium finishes stand out, but they came alongside two DNSs early on, one due to his own misjudgment in Melbourne and another from an electrical hiccup in China.
To add to the drama, Piastri has had two finishes outside the points and, following a late retirement in Budapest, finds himself without a podium in seven races. Meanwhile, his teammate Lando Norris secured victory in Hungary, benefiting from a strategic overcut on Piastri, whose mid-race brush with Carlos Sainz didn't help his case.
Stella remains optimistic, suggesting that once Piastri gets the hang of the 2026 cars, his performance will rise. "We've seen Lando develop tremendously, and Oscar is on a similar path," Stella remarked. He believes Piastri's work with his engineering team is already paving the way for a strong second half of the season.
Recently, Piastri joined his team at Portimao for a Testing of a Previous Car session, where he completed 55 laps. It was a valuable opportunity for him to familiarize himself with the circuit, which is set to rejoin the F1 calendar in 2027.
Reflecting on the session, Piastri said, "It was my first time at Portimao in an F1 car. The conditions and elevation changes made it an exciting challenge. We completed our programme, and it’s a good point to pause for the summer break."
McLaren is hopeful that the break will allow Piastri and the team to recharge and tackle the remainder of the season with renewed vigor. As the F1 circus takes a breather, all eyes will be on whether Piastri can translate his potential into consistent results.
