Mercedes Eyes Major Upgrade Post-2026 Summer Break to Stay Ahead of Ferrari
Mercedes plans a significant upgrade for their Formula 1 car after the summer break, aiming to maintain their lead over Ferrari. Despite strong competition, Mercedes remains confident in their car's overall balance and performance.
As the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses, Mercedes finds itself feeling the heat from Ferrari. While the German team has been leading both the Constructors' and Drivers' Championships, Ferrari's recent victories and strong performances have put them on Mercedes' radar.
Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Simone Resta, Mercedes’ Deputy Technical Director, revealed plans for a substantial upgrade post-summer break. Speaking before Free Practice 2, Resta acknowledged that while Mercedes has been consistent with incremental improvements, the time has come for something more significant. "We’ve been adding small steps each race," Resta explained, "but after the summer shutdown, we’re looking to bring something more sizeable to the track."
This move comes as Ferrari, with drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, has won two of the last three races, even leading in practice sessions in Budapest. Despite this, Resta remains optimistic about Mercedes' 2026 car, praising its balance across chassis, suspension, and power unit integration. "The car has performed well in all conditions," Resta noted, "without one dominant feature, which speaks to its overall balance."
Although Ferrari has been aggressive with their upgrades throughout the season, Mercedes still holds a performance edge, a testament to their strong start under the new regulations. This planned major upgrade is Mercedes' strategic response to maintain their competitive advantage and fend off the increasingly competitive Ferrari.
As the season resumes at the end of August with the Dutch Grand Prix, all eyes will be on whether Mercedes' sizeable upgrade can keep them comfortably ahead of their Italian rivals.
