Valtteri Bottas acknowledges the unpredictability of Formula 1 as rumors swirl about his future with Cadillac. With Sergio Perez seemingly secure, Bottas faces speculation of a potential replacement.
Valtteri Bottas has candidly acknowledged the unpredictability that defines Formula 1, amid swirling rumors about his future with Cadillac. Bottas, who returned to the F1 grid this year after a hiatus, teamed up with Sergio Perez as the duo spearheaded Cadillac's inaugural season in the championship.
Though Bottas and Perez have shown parity in qualifying, race day results tell a different story, with Bottas trailing Perez 11-4 in races finished by both. This disparity has fueled speculation about Bottas' position within the team, despite him having signed a multi-year contract.
Marcin Budkowski, Cadillac's team principal, was non-committal when questioned in Austin about the security of his driver line-up. "This is the last place I would comment on driver contracts in general; I think it’s not something that is done in the press," Budkowski remarked, indicating that official announcements would come at the appropriate time.
While Perez is presumed to have secured his seat, Bottas' future appears less certain. Colton Herta, who has participated in three FP1 sessions for Cadillac this season as a test driver, is rumored to be in the running for Bottas' spot.
Initially dismissive of the gossip at the Circuit of the Americas, Bottas acknowledged after a race retirement due to a power unit failure that "anything can happen." When asked if he had received assurances about his role next season, Bottas told PlanetF1.com and other media, "Yes, last year when I signed, I know the terms."
He added, "I mean, it is Formula 1. You know, if cows could fly… anything can always happen in this sport. But for now, they seem happy with what they’re getting out of me, so I think that’s still all that matters."
Bottas also pointed to the numerous challenges Cadillac has faced in its debut season, which have impacted his performance relative to Perez. "I would say it’s impossible to get a read," he remarked. "On a year like this, with so many issues, and the problem is sometimes we don’t quite understand them."
Despite these challenges, Bottas noted that the pace was comparable to Perez in certain races, attributing some difficulties to less visible factors like brake management and other technical hurdles. "There’s been lots of things in the background that maybe not everyone sees," he explained.
As rumors persist, Bottas remains focused on the task at hand, but the whispers of change around Cadillac's driver line-up for 2027 continue to linger.
