Max Verstappen nabbed pole position for the Singapore Sprint, narrowly beating George Russell and Charles Leclerc. The Red Bull driver capitalized on a perfect lap under the Marina Bay lights to stay ahead of his rivals.
Max Verstappen has added another feather to his cap by securing pole position for the Singapore Sprint, fresh off his first win of the 2026 season. The Dutch driver outpaced Mercedes' George Russell and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in a session that kept fans on the edge of their seats at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
With four teams vying for supremacy after a mere hour of Free Practice, Verstappen delivered a masterclass in timing by setting a lap of 1m 31.156s on soft tyres. This lap left him 0.120s ahead of Russell, while Leclerc trailed a further tenth behind in P3. Despite a brief investigation for a possible yellow flag infraction during SQ1, Verstappen's pole position remained intact.
McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris captured P4 and P5, with Piastri narrowly missing Leclerc's time by 0.055s. Lewis Hamilton took sixth in the second Ferrari, followed by championship leader Kimi Antonelli and Racing Bull's Liam Lawson. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar and Alpine's Pierre Gasly completed the top ten, although both had lap times deleted in SQ3.
In the backdrop, Alpine's Franco Colapinto missed out on the top ten due to a late improvement from Russell, ending up in P11. Audi's Nico Hulkenberg followed in P12, while Haas and Aston Martin drivers filled out the subsequent positions. Arvid Lindblad, who had cautioned a more reserved approach after previous mishaps on street circuits, narrowly missed SQ2, ending in P17. Williams and Cadillac brought up the rear, with Alex Albon leading the backmarkers.
The session had its share of drama, courtesy of Sergio Perez, who brought out a red flag after an encounter with the barrier at Turn 4. His Cadillac was left with a damaged front wing, and debris littered the track. Despite the interruption, Verstappen set the pace in SQ1, and the session concluded with Leclerc and Mercedes' drivers closely following.
In SQ2, Ferrari showcased their speed with Leclerc posting a 1m 32.457s, while Russell faced pressure to improve from P8. He eventually clawed his way to P4, edging out Colapinto from the top ten.
The final segment, SQ3, saw Verstappen put in a stellar lap to claim pole. McLaren initially led with Norris, but Verstappen's blistering pace in the final sector left his competitors in the dust. Russell and Leclerc followed, while Hamilton, despite some struggles, took P6.
"It’s always close here in Singapore," Verstappen remarked. "Once we put on the soft tyres, the car came alive, and I’m thrilled to be on pole."
With the grid set, the drivers will gear up for the Sprint race, promising more high-octane action under Singapore's night skies.
