Antonelli's Dutch GP Sprint Qualifying Marred by Gravel Mishap

Kimi Antonelli, the current leader in the F1 championship standings, faced a challenging Sprint Qualifying session at the Dutch Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver's day took a turn for the worse when he veered off into the gravel at Zandvoort, resulting in floor damage that left him finishing in fifth place.

Having set the pace in FP1 earlier, Antonelli's form took a hit during his first lap of SQ1. He ran wide at the penultimate corner, which necessitated a return to the pits for an assessment. The result was significant damage to the car's floor, as Antonelli later explained. "Oh yeah, big time! I had a couple holes in the floor," he remarked when asked about the impact. The team initially estimated a loss of 25 points of downforce due to the incident.

Despite efforts to patch up the damage, Antonelli admitted that the lingering effects were felt throughout SQ2 and SQ3, particularly in slower corners. "I was struggling a lot in the low speed [corners]. But it is what it is," he said, reflecting on the incident. The mistake was attributed to excessive entry speed into the last corner, leading to a loss of control and the gravel excursion.

Rebuilding confidence after such an event is never straightforward, but Antonelli seemed optimistic about bouncing back. "Obviously also it was not easy to build the confidence back, but still decently close, and we’ll have another go tomorrow," he stated.

Heading into the Sprint race, Antonelli maintains a 50-point lead over his closest challenger, Lewis Hamilton, who will start from seventh. Meanwhile, his teammate George Russell secured pole position. Antonelli remains determined to minimize the damage and capitalize on the Sprint. "We’ll try to do the best race we can," he said. "Of course, it’s very close at the front, so it’s not going to be easy to overtake."

As the team works to repair the car further, Antonelli's focus is on making the most of the upcoming sessions. "We’ll try to do the best we can, even with the damage, and then from Qualifying we’re going to tidy the car up and go again," he concluded.
