Audi Looks to Appeal Decision on Tsunoda's Grid Maneuver at Monza
Audi has expressed their intent to appeal the decision not to penalize Yuki Tsunoda for a grid position error at the Italian Grand Prix. The team argues that the incident warranted a penalty, which could have elevated their driver Gabriel Bortoleto into the points.
Audi has taken steps to contest a decision made at the Italian Grand Prix, specifically regarding Yuki Tsunoda’s grid positioning incident. Tsunoda, driving for Racing Bulls, managed to finish 10th and secure a point despite what Audi believes was a breach of the rules.
The incident in question occurred after Charles Leclerc's crash on lap two, which brought out the red flag. Upon the race's restart, Tsunoda mistakenly aimed for the wrong grid slot but corrected himself just in time. This prompted an additional formation lap, a decision made by the Race Director to ensure safety, based on Tsunoda's maneuver.
Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto finished just outside the points in 11th, and the team is understandably miffed. They contend that Tsunoda's actions should have required him to start from the pit lane, as outlined in Article B5.9.4 of the F1 2026 sporting regulations. This rule dictates that a driver causing an extra formation lap must start from the pit lane.
The stewards, however, saw it differently. Their investigation, which included video analysis from multiple angles, determined that the Race Director's decision to call an extra formation lap was a precautionary measure and not a direct result of Tsunoda's actions. They concluded no penalty was warranted because the team was never informed that Tsunoda was considered the cause of the additional lap.
Audi's formal statement highlights their disagreement with the stewards' ruling, emphasizing their belief in the relevance of Article B5.9.4. While they've filed their intention to appeal, the team is keeping further comments under wraps until the FIA proceeds with the appeal process.
