Budkowski Adjusts to Fast-Paced Life Leading Cadillac in F1

Marcin Budkowski has returned to the Formula 1 paddock, bringing his expertise to Cadillac as their new team principal. It's been a whirlwind month since he replaced Graeme Lowdon, and Budkowski describes the adjustment as "a bit of a shock to the system." Having spent time away from the sport, working with media outlets like Eleven Sports Poland and Viaplay, he's reacquainting himself with the high-speed demands of the F1 world.

Budkowski's resume is extensive, with stints at Prost, McLaren, Alpine, and even the FIA, but leading Cadillac presents its own unique challenges. As he noted during a press conference ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, "What hits you first is the pace of F1... it's incredibly fast-paced, technical and hard-working, especially when you start in a new team and new project."

His reintroduction to the pit wall at Zandvoort during FP1 was particularly jarring, with twelve channels of communication buzzing in his ears. Yet, he remains focused on the essentials: "It's about people, it's about building the team," he emphasized, underscoring the importance of leadership and vision.

Cadillac's debut season in Formula 1 has been a challenging one, as they remain the only team yet to score a point. Their best finish so far came courtesy of Valtteri Bottas, who managed a P13 in China. Despite these hurdles, Budkowski finds reasons for optimism. "I've seen a lot of good things in the team," he says, acknowledging the impressive feat of building a team from scratch in such a short period.

He notes that while there are no legacy burdens, Cadillac faces the typical growing pains of a new team, including shortcuts and reliability issues. However, Budkowski is focused on operational improvements and setting clearer long-term priorities. "In the short-term, reliability. We've struggled with that in some areas," he admits, but he remains hopeful that with time, the team will elevate its performance and pace.

As Cadillac continues its maiden voyage in Formula 1, the road ahead is challenging but ripe with opportunity. Budkowski's experience and leadership will be crucial in steering the team towards future success.
