Lando Norris has managed to sidestep a penalty after a collision with his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, during the final lap of the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race. The incident unfolded as Norris attempted a bold move down the inside of Piastri at Turn 5, resulting in contact that forced Piastri to retire and left Norris finishing in eighth.
In the heat of the moment, Norris apologized over the team radio, explaining that he believed he was fully alongside Piastri when they made contact. "Sorry about that. Obviously didn’t want that to happen but I thought I was fully alongside," he said, adding that he simply ran out of space at the apex.
After reviewing the incident, the FIA stewards announced that no further action would be taken against Norris. They gathered testimonies from both drivers and reviewed video evidence, concluding that neither driver was predominantly at fault. According to the stewards' statement, both Norris and Piastri contributed to the collision, which led to their decision not to penalize either driver.
The stewards' report detailed that Norris had attempted to overtake Piastri on the inside at Turn 5, but Piastri had not anticipated the move. Despite Piastri's attempt to leave space, Norris found himself using the inside kerb and braking as the space narrowed, resulting in the collision. With both drivers sharing the blame, the stewards opted for no further action.
