George Russell shares his thoughts after Kimi Antonelli secures the 2026 F1 World Championship. Despite a challenging season, Russell vows to push forward and improve.
George Russell has finally broken his silence following his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli's triumph in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship, celebrated in Mexico City. Russell, who skipped mandatory media duties with a €5000 fine falling on Mercedes, was given the nod to leave the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez early.
Toto Wolff noted that Russell's early departure was expected, given that he had already congratulated Antonelli, his family, and crew members before heading out. Entering the season as a favorite, Russell started strong by winning two of the first three races, briefly leading the championship. However, Antonelli’s impressive form, coupled with reliability issues for Russell, soon shifted the balance. Antonelli ultimately clinched his first championship with four races remaining.
Reflecting on the season via social media, Russell admitted, "This season started off exactly how I had hoped but it very quickly unravelled with tough luck and poor performances." He described the year as one with more bad days than good, characterized by confusion and difficulty in maintaining morale.
Despite the setbacks, Russell graciously congratulated Antonelli, acknowledging his exceptional season. "You truly deserve the Championship," he stated. He also commended the Mercedes team for creating the top-performing car and power unit, highlighting their collective effort over the past four years.
Looking ahead, Russell promised to give his all for the remainder of the season and into the next, aiming to rediscover his past form and hopeful for a bit more luck. He closed with gratitude for the support he's received throughout this challenging year.
