Kimi Antonelli Reflects on Mental Struggles and Mercedes Support in Championship Bid

Kimi Antonelli, on the brink of clinching the F1 World Championship, shares insights into the mental challenges he faced in his rookie season and how Mercedes' support has bolstered his confidence. The young Italian is poised to become the youngest-ever champion, attributing his success to a shift in focus and team support.

Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of making history in Formula 1, potentially just days away from becoming the youngest World Champion. With a commanding 102-point lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, Antonelli's rise has been nothing short of remarkable. In his second year, the young Italian has certainly faced his share of challenges, particularly during his rookie season, which he candidly described as mentally draining.

Reflecting on his early days, Antonelli shared that the chaos both on and off the track took a toll on him. The Grand Prix at Imola last season marked a turning point for him, teaching him how to manage external pressures better. "I felt like I needed time to digest, to look at the season again, understand what was good about the season, what was not good," Antonelli explained. He realized the importance of focusing solely on his performance on the track, letting the team manage the rest. "Last year, I was worrying about way too many things, especially at my home race, and that’s why I felt so drained mentally so early into the weekend," he admitted.

This year, Antonelli feels more "protected" by the team, allowing him to concentrate on racing. "The way I managed myself this year, I feel like more things are less important," he noted, highlighting the role of his team in managing distractions. This support has been pivotal in allowing him to focus on what truly matters: his performance on the track.

Antonelli's maturity and ability to adapt quickly have been key to his success. From his crash at Monza in his first Mercedes outing to the disappointing DNF at Imola, he's faced numerous hurdles. However, under the guidance of Toto Wolff, Antonelli has learned to handle the pressures of being a championship contender. His resilience and focus have made him a deserving champion in 2026.

The upcoming United States Grand Prix presents Antonelli with his first opportunity to secure the championship. While Max Verstappen remains a formidable opponent, speculation around the paddock suggests Antonelli might play it safe, with some predicting Verstappen, Leclerc, and Russell to make the podium. Nonetheless, Antonelli's journey from a rookie overwhelmed by the spotlight to a poised title contender is a testament to his growth and the unwavering support from Mercedes.
