Stella admitted the team could have executed better, especially given the MCL40's known weaknesses on the straights. However, Sunday's race told a different story.
Both drivers climbed the ranks, finishing P4 and P5, with Norris leading the duo. This improvement was attributed to a better overall execution, which was crucial given the circuit's challenges. Stella noted the complexity of overtaking at Monza, particularly highlighting the difficulty Norris faced in getting past Pierre Gasly.
The race also featured an intriguing intra-team battle between Norris and Piastri, which McLaren allowed to unfold without interference. "For Lando to have a shot at Verstappen, he needed to earn it by overtaking Oscar," Stella explained. With both cars on identical tyres and setups, the team saw no reason to meddle, allowing the drivers to race naturally.
