Andrea Stella Praises Kimi Antonelli's Remarkable Rise to F1 Champion

Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal, has lauded Kimi Antonelli as he edges closer to clinching the 2026 F1 title. Antonelli's potential victory would make him one of the youngest champions and only the third Italian to ever win the championship.

Andrea Stella, the team principal of McLaren, has expressed admiration for Mercedes' rising star, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is on the brink of securing the 2026 Formula 1 title. The Italian driver needs just two points at the Mexico City Grand Prix to seal his championship victory. Even with a solitary point, Antonelli could clinch the title, provided George Russell doesn't win the race. If both Russell and Lewis Hamilton fail to win, Antonelli could win the championship without scoring any points at all.

Antonelli enters the weekend with a commanding 123-point lead over his teammate Russell and 124 points over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. This impressive margin is a testament to Antonelli's dominant performance this season, which includes nine victories from 18 races.

McLaren's Stella finds it remarkable that Antonelli's name will soon be mentioned alongside legendary Italian champions Giuseppe Farina and Alberto Ascari. Farina was the first-ever F1 champion in 1950, and Ascari took consecutive titles in 1952 and 1953. Italy has been waiting since then for another homegrown hero, and Antonelli seems poised to deliver.

Stella is not alone in his praise. Mercedes' team boss, Toto Wolff, has acknowledged that the W17 car suits Antonelli's driving style better, which has contributed to his success. The young Italian has adapted remarkably well to the 2026 regulations, which introduced significant changes to car design and performance.

Stella also highlights Antonelli's aggressive yet effective driving style, noting how he pushes the limits of the track with precision. This approach has been crucial in mastering the challenging cars of 2026, which require a fine balance of speed and control. Despite the aggressive style, Antonelli has managed to consistently deliver top results, further cementing his status as a deserving champion.

With nine Grand Prix wins, seven pole positions, and 15 podium finishes this season, Antonelli's potential title would not only be a personal triumph but a historic moment for Italian motorsport. At just 20 years old, he could become the youngest-ever F1 world champion, etching his name in the annals of the sport alongside Italy's racing greats.
