Damon Hill's Worry for Kimi Antonelli's Swift Success in F1

Kimi Antonelli is on the brink of becoming F1's youngest champion, but Damon Hill voices concern over the ease of his journey. Hill hopes the young driver doesn't come to expect such straightforward success in a typically competitive sport.

Kimi Antonelli is on the cusp of making history as the youngest Formula 1 world champion. However, former F1 champion Damon Hill has a bit of a concern about the young Italian's rapid rise to the top. Antonelli, who secured his ninth win of the 2026 season at the Circuit of the Americas, is poised to clinch the title if results go his way at the next race in Mexico City. The title would have been his in Austin if rivals George Russell and Lewis Hamilton had finished just one spot lower than they did.

As it stands, both British drivers need to win in Mexico to keep their championship hopes alive. If Russell takes the win, Antonelli only needs to finish eighth to secure the title, and if Hamilton wins, Antonelli must place ninth or higher.

Damon Hill, the 1996 world champion, has expressed his concerns on the Chequered Flag podcast. He worries that Antonelli might get used to this level of dominance and expect it to continue unchecked. "This guy doesn't seem to feel pressure; he's too young to really know what it is," Hill noted. "My only concern is that everything is happening so quickly and easily for him, and I hope he doesn't expect it to always be this way. Formula 1 is usually much more competitive."

Antonelli's victory in the United States was a masterclass in speed and strategy. Starting from pole position, having outpaced Max Verstappen, he led the race from the start. Mercedes opted for a one-stop strategy, starting Antonelli on medium compound tyres, a move that even caught Ferrari by surprise. Charles Leclerc, who finished second, admitted that Ferrari hadn’t even considered such a strategy.

Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner echoed Hill's sentiments, impressed by Antonelli's performance but worried about the young driver's perception of the sport. "What he did in qualifying and the race was like nobody else was there," Steiner said. "But I hope he doesn't think it’s always going to be this easy because it isn’t."

With the next race in Mexico, Antonelli is inching closer to a historic championship win, but as Hill and Steiner caution, the true test may come in managing expectations beyond this remarkable season.
