George Russell is hoping for answers from Mercedes after a disappointing United States Grand Prix hindered his championship aspirations. Despite still being in mathematical contention, the gap to teammate Kimi Antonelli seems insurmountable with just a ninth-place finish needed for Antonelli to secure the title.
George Russell is keen for Mercedes to uncover why his performance at the United States Grand Prix was, in his words, 'rubbish.' With Kimi Antonelli needing only a ninth-place finish in the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix to clinch the 2026 F1 world title, Russell's hopes are dwindling.
Currently, Russell is clinging to second place by a single point over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. While both drivers are still technically in the title race, their chances are slim after Antonelli's victory in the U.S., which widened his lead to a commanding 123 points.
Russell, who was an early favorite for the championship, now finds himself wrestling to maintain second place. Reflecting on his season, he said, "As long as we win the Constructors’ Championship, that’s the main thing. Obviously, I’d like to finish best of the rest, but P2, P3, P5 is not champion, so it doesn’t mean anything."
Russell's performance in Austin was particularly frustrating, finishing eighth and 54 seconds behind Antonelli. He's on a quest to pinpoint the issues that led to his lackluster pace, which he admitted wasn't up to par. "The pace was rubbish," he stated bluntly, acknowledging that a five-second penalty didn't help his cause. "Hopefully, there are some answers somewhere, but at the moment, I don’t have them."
Starting sixth on the grid, Russell struggled to keep up with Antonelli, who benefited from a pole position start and clear air. Yet, former world champion Jenson Button suggested that the 54-second gap might not accurately reflect Russell's capabilities. "George has had both tough and great races," Button noted, attributing some of Russell's difficulties to the challenges of racing in the pack and strategic setbacks.
Despite the disappointing outing, Russell remains focused on understanding and improving his performance, hoping Mercedes can find the insights needed to bolster his pace in the races ahead.
