Toto Wolff Addresses Mercedes' Performance Gap Amid Russell's Challenges

Mercedes' Toto Wolff has shed light on the performance differences between drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell at the United States Grand Prix. While Antonelli clinched victory, Russell struggled, prompting Wolff to discuss the car's challenging operating window.

Toto Wolff has acknowledged that the Mercedes car’s tricky operating window played a role in the performance difference between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell during the United States Grand Prix. It was a weekend of stark contrasts for the Mercedes duo in Austin. Antonelli cruised to victory, significantly boosting his chances for a maiden Drivers' title, while Russell finished eighth, over 50 seconds behind his more junior teammate.

Russell, who was back with Mercedes’ latest updates after using older parts in Singapore, found himself at a loss to explain his sluggish pace compared to Antonelli. He qualified over four-tenths slower and struggled throughout the race. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Russell candidly admitted, "Just not being quick enough, to be honest. I need to try and understand why it is. It’s strange when you’re so far off, so hopefully there’s some answers somewhere. But, anyway, I don’t have one."

In contrast, Antonelli appeared in top form, executing a flawless one-stop strategy to outsmart his two-stopping competitors, securing his ninth win of the 2026 season. Wolff praised Antonelli's performance at the Circuit of the Americas, calling it his most complete race in Formula 1 to date. He noted that the gap in performance was due to both Antonelli's exceptional skill and Russell's difficulties with the car's narrow working window.

"On Kimi’s side, the main headline is that, for me, it’s the best race that he’s delivered so far," Wolff said. "He controlled the race like a champion, even though he isn’t one yet."

In contrast, Russell struggled significantly, something Wolff attributed to the challenging operational window of the Mercedes car. "In Q2, he was there or thereabouts. Q3 didn’t work – he said that goes on me," Wolff explained. "And today in the race, I don’t know. We got stuck behind [Oscar] Piastri, which looks a bit unfair, why he didn’t get past, it’s the same engine, it’s the same electric charging and deployment."

Russell's race was further complicated by a penalty for gaining an advantage at Turn 12 during a tussle with Piastri, which dropped him behind the McLaren. Wolff questioned the penalty, suggesting it was harsh for a lap one incident but admitted it wasn’t the main reason for Russell's lackluster performance.

Despite the setback, Russell entered the season as a favorite for the title, driven by expectations that Mercedes would dominate. The 169-point lead he held over Antonelli at the start of their partnership seemed promising. Wolff noted that the regulatory changes had leveled the playing field, and Antonelli has adapted impressively. "I think maybe it was to his benefit that the regulations were all new," Wolff assessed.

Wolff reflected on Antonelli's mindset, saying, "He’s come to my office before getting ready and just sat down on the sofa and said, ‘I’m going to enjoy this one. And isn’t it funny? I’m not thinking at all about the championship.’"

Nonetheless, Wolff remains confident in Russell’s potential, emphasizing the need for the team to support him better. "George, for all of us in the team, is a champion," Wolff asserted. "We see this variability in results. When we land the car in the way that suits him, he’s absolutely fast. But when it drops out of that operational window, he struggles, and he struggles more than maybe Kimi."

The challenge, according to Wolff, is to understand what Russell needs to perform consistently. "What is it that he doesn’t like? What is it that we need to do in terms of modifying the car, setting it up in a different way for him to go fast? Because it’s all there: the intelligence, the ability, the determination."
