Hamilton Unfazed by COTA Bumps Despite Verstappen's Spine Concerns

Lewis Hamilton remains untroubled by the bumps at Circuit of the Americas, which Max Verstappen claims have affected his spine. While some drivers are critical, Hamilton believes the bumps add character to the track.

Lewis Hamilton, a five-time winner at the United States Grand Prix, has brushed off concerns about the bumpy surface at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). This comes after Max Verstappen voiced worries about the impact of the track's bumps on his lower spine, describing the situation as 'not great.'

Formula 1 is back at COTA, and the conversation has been dominated by the track's uneven surface. Verstappen, among other drivers, has been vocal about the discomfort caused by bumps, particularly at Turn 1 and Turn 19. Carlos Sainz, driving for Williams, has labeled these specific bumps as 'unacceptable.'

Sainz noted that the Grand Prix Drivers Association has already raised the issue with the FIA, urging action to ensure such bumps are measured and addressed in future races. He emphasized that while most of the track's bumps could be seen as adding character, the significant jolts at these two turns need immediate attention.

Hamilton, however, doesn't share these concerns. The Ferrari driver, who will start fifth on the grid as he tries to extend the championship contest against pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli, expressed his fondness for the track's character. 'It is bumpy, but I think it’s okay. I didn’t have any problems with bumps,' he stated. Hamilton further elaborated that he enjoys the challenge the bumps present, as they require drivers to make corrections and adapt. 'In a perfect world, it would be a flat track, but then there would be a lack of character,' he added.

Reflecting on the bumps at Turns 1 and 19, Hamilton noted that while they exist, 'everyone’s in the same boat.' He dismissed the severity of the complaints, saying, 'People are complaining, but I’m 42 and my back is fine.'

The debate over the track's condition continues, with Verstappen and others advocating for changes, while Hamilton embraces the challenge, adding another layer to the dynamics at this weekend's race.
