Kimi Antonelli snatched pole position for the United States Grand Prix, narrowly beating Max Verstappen. The Mercedes driver is poised for a potential championship win this weekend.
Kimi Antonelli put on a commanding performance in Austin, claiming pole position for the United States Grand Prix. The Italian driver, already eyeing a potential world championship title this weekend, clocked a 1:34.035 in Q3. This impressive lap ensured he couldn't be caught, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen falling short by nearly two-tenths of a second.
Antonelli's pole marks his seventh of the 2026 season, underscoring his dominance this year. Verstappen, meanwhile, managed to outpace his teammate Isack Hadjar and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton, also driving for Ferrari, rounded out the top five.
Mercedes teammate George Russell found himself in a frustrating P6, while McLaren's Oscar Piastri improved to seventh after Lando Norris had a lap time deleted due to track limits. Norris was consequently pushed down to P8.
Completing the top ten were Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson. However, Lindblad will face a five-place grid penalty for exceeding his engine allocation, shaking up the final race grid.
The qualifying session saw Pierre Gasly narrowly miss out on the top ten by just 0.022 seconds, placing him 11th. Audi's strategy didn't quite pan out, leaving Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto just behind him. Franco Colapinto of Alpine qualified in 14th but will drop ten places due to a grid penalty, promoting Fernando Alonso and Ollie Bearman.
Several drivers struggled with track limits, a recurring theme throughout the weekend. Esteban Ocon was knocked out in Q1, starting 17th, ahead of Lance Stroll and the Williams duo of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon. Albon's disappointment was palpable as he questioned his team's timing strategy.
Cadillac drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas filled the last two spots on the grid, though they will benefit from penalties applied to others. As the drivers prepared for the main event, the focus remained on Antonelli and his chance to secure the championship title.
