Mercedes took a bold step replacing Lewis Hamilton with Kimi Antonelli, despite skepticism from within. Antonelli has since silenced doubters by becoming the youngest-ever F1 champion.
Mercedes faced a monumental decision when Lewis Hamilton announced his departure to join Ferrari. The task of filling the void left by the seven-time world champion fell to a then-teenage Kimi Antonelli, a move that raised more than a few eyebrows within the team.
Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, stood firmly behind Antonelli from the onset. Even after Antonelli's dramatic crash during his first Formula 1 session at Monza, Wolff remained supportive. Fast forward, and Antonelli is now the youngest-ever Formula 1 champion, a testament to the faith placed in him.
Gwen Lagrue, Mercedes Driver Development Advisor, shared insights with High Performance Racing about the decision to elevate Antonelli to the F1 team. Lagrue recounted the moment Hamilton informed Wolff of his decision to leave, prompting the question of who would take his place. Lagrue immediately suggested Antonelli, who was then honing his skills in F2. Although Wolff was quickly on board, convincing the rest of the team and stakeholders was a different story.
James Allison, the technical director at the time, was notably skeptical about promoting Antonelli. Despite his reservations, Allison acknowledged Antonelli's talent, describing him as the "real deal" following an impressive F1 test in 2024. In hindsight, even Allison would likely admit that Wolff's decision to back Antonelli was a masterstroke.
Antonelli's success has not only vindicated Wolff's decision but also sparked interest from other teams, with Piero Ferrari expressing a desire to see Antonelli in red after his 2026 title win. Whatever the future holds, Antonelli's meteoric rise has already become a remarkable chapter in Mercedes' storied history.
