Kimi Antonelli's rise to the Formula 1 world championship came with a cost for Mercedes, as two sponsors departed due to doubts about his potential. Despite early skepticism, Antonelli has now become the sport's youngest champion.
Kimi Antonelli’s path to becoming the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history wasn’t without its bumps, particularly for Mercedes. Team principal Toto Wolff revealed that the decision to bring in the young Italian led to two sponsors jumping ship, doubting the wisdom of placing their bets on Antonelli. However, those who stuck around are now the ones toasting their foresight, as Antonelli clinched the title in Mexico with a podium finish.
Antonelli's journey to the top has been rapid and, at times, rocky. After a challenging rookie season as Lewis Hamilton's successor at Mercedes, not many expected him to outshine his seasoned teammate, George Russell. Yet, as the Silver Arrows found their stride, Antonelli delivered.
Reflecting on Antonelli's triumph on Sky F1, Wolff shared how surreal it feels to see Antonelli, once an 11-year-old karting prodigy, rise through the ranks to conquer the junior formulas and now, Formula 1. Despite a tough year in F2 and initial skepticism, Mercedes trusted the young driver. "We lost two sponsors because they doubted him," Wolff confessed. "But those who stayed have been rewarded."
Wolff recalled the moment Hamilton decided to move to Ferrari, prompting an instinctive reaction to promote Antonelli. "People questioned if he belonged in F1 at all," Wolff admitted, noting the early struggles that included a nine-race point drought. Yet, Wolff remained confident in his decision. "It was always a calculated risk," he explained.
Now, Antonelli not only succeeds Sebastian Vettel as the youngest F1 world champion but also vindicates Wolff’s faith. As he heads to Interlagos for the Brazilian Grand Prix, Antonelli's journey serves as a reminder of the potential rewards of taking risks — and the occasional cost of doing so.
