Mercedes Set to Focus 2027 Car Development Around Kimi Antonelli

Kimi Antonelli's dominant season is prompting Mercedes to pivot their future car development strategy around him. George Russell, once the expected team leader, now faces increased competition within the team.

Kimi Antonelli is on the brink of clinching the World Championship, and Mercedes is already preparing to shift their focus towards him for their 2027 car development. With a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli has put himself in a position to become Formula 1's youngest champion if he finishes ninth or better in Mexico. Meanwhile, George Russell, once seen as the team's frontrunner, is trailing behind, having finished a distant P8 in Austin.

This season, Antonelli has outshone his teammate, demonstrating a knack for maximizing the performance of the Mercedes car, even when it's not the fastest on the grid. His ability to adapt and excel under the current regulations has been noted by former driver Ivan Capelli, who suggests that Mercedes engineers are now more inclined to follow Antonelli's lead when it comes to car development.

"This victory has a meaning," Capelli commented on Sky Sports Italy. "We are evidently racing towards the World Championship, which will be reached in the next Grand Prix. But it has an even deeper meaning in my opinion and that is that Kimi understood this car and Russell does not. Today, the engineers within the Mercedes team, if they have to listen to someone, they go to Kimi."

With Antonelli poised to become the 2027 reigning world champion, Mercedes is likely to build their car around his driving style and preferences. Russell, now in a tight battle for second place in the Drivers' Championship with Lewis Hamilton, will need to adjust to this new team dynamic. The Italian's performance in Austin, where he expertly handled a recent upgrade package, further solidified his role as the team's lead driver.

As the season nears its conclusion, Mercedes seems ready to place their bets on Antonelli's promising future, potentially sidelining Russell, who has struggled to keep pace with the top contenders. This strategic shift could define the team's approach for the next few seasons.
