Nico Rosberg on Lewis Hamilton's Suspicions During Their Mercedes Rivalry

Nico Rosberg recalls the tense rivalry with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, highlighting Hamilton's suspicions during their 2016 season. Rosberg discusses the impact of a controversial mechanic swap and Hamilton's struggle with team dynamics.

Nico Rosberg has shed light on the tension-filled years he spent as Lewis Hamilton's teammate at Mercedes, suggesting that Hamilton often suspected conspiracies when things didn't go his way. The rivalry between the two was intense, despite Hamilton's initial success in securing the championship in 2014 and retaining it in 2015. By 2016, their relationship had soured significantly, culminating in Rosberg clinching the championship by a mere five points, after which he promptly retired.

Rosberg reminisced about a particular moment that added fuel to the fire: the swapping of mechanics between the two drivers at the beginning of the 2016 season. This decision by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff aimed to address internal friction but ended up being a significant point of contention. Rosberg admitted that he initially felt his new crew might not be as invested in his success, given their previous ties to Hamilton. However, he later recognized Wolff's move as a strategic attempt to maintain team balance.

In a conversation on F1's Beyond the Grid podcast, Rosberg shared, "Fortunately for me, it became my new family, my extended family, so that worked really well. Lewis struggled more." He noted that Hamilton often perceived setbacks as part of a conspiracy against him. Hamilton himself had described his original mechanics as his 'soldiers', acknowledging the difficulty of adjusting to the new team, although he did recognize their shared drive to succeed.

Rosberg suggested that Hamilton's focus on these suspicions may have hindered his performance in the early part of the season, adding, "He struggled a little bit more with that initially and shot himself a little bit in the foot with that in the first part of the season. Everybody was always treated equally to the extent possible."

The 2016 season was also marked by technical issues for Hamilton, which did little to ease his suspicions. He encountered power unit problems that left him starting from the back of the grid in China and Russia, and famously, he retired while leading the Malaysian Grand Prix. These challenges strained his relationship with Mercedes, to the point where both parties were uncertain about their future together.

However, the off-season brought some clarity. Hamilton and Wolff managed to clear the air, and the driver went on to win four consecutive championships with Mercedes, cementing their partnership as one of the most successful in Formula 1 history.
