Toto Wolff Dismisses Helmut Marko's Criticism of George Russell

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has pushed back against Helmut Marko's claim that George Russell won't fight for another F1 title. Wolff insists Russell has the skill and potential to succeed, despite a challenging season.

Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, has come to the defense of his driver George Russell following comments from Helmut Marko, the former Red Bull advisor. Marko suggested that Russell's chances of contending for another F1 title were slim, especially given the dominance of his teammate Kimi Antonelli this season. With Antonelli needing only a couple more points to clinch the 2026 championship, Russell's prospects appear bleak.

Russell's performance at the United States Grand Prix didn't help his case, as he needed to finish at least eighth to keep his championship hopes alive, which he barely managed. This result was part of a broader trend of underwhelming performances, with his Azerbaijan victory being a rare highlight. Meanwhile, Antonelli has racked up nine wins this season, with Russell stuck at three, and other drivers like Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen nipping at his heels.

Marko didn't hold back, remarking, "Russell is no longer the number one driver. Antonelli has quite clearly taken that spot from him." He cast doubt on Russell's future as a title contender or a team's top driver.

Wolff, however, disagrees. "He’s my Austrian not so buddy, but I respect his opinion," Wolff said of Marko. "But I think he’s wrong on George. George has all the ability. I think the car doesn’t suit him." Wolff suggested that the pressure of competing alongside a rising star like Antonelli might have affected Russell. But he remains confident in Russell's talent, noting his past successes in F2, F3, and karting.

Despite Antonelli's strong season, Wolff still holds Russell in high esteem, describing him as a champion at heart. He acknowledged that Russell's performance is inconsistent, sometimes struggling when the car's setup isn't optimal. "When we land the car in the way that suits him, he’s absolutely fine," Wolff explained, adding that the team needs to find out what adjustments are necessary for Russell to perform at his best.

Wolff emphasized that Russell's issues aren't due to a lack of speed or skill, but rather how the car's setup interacts with his driving style. "George is not half a second slower, three-tenths slower than Kimi," Wolff stated. "It’s just absolutely not the case." The task now is to fine-tune the car to better suit Russell's needs, as Wolff believes that Russell has the intelligence, ability, and determination required to succeed in F1.
