Daniel Ricciardo Transforms Retirement 'Humiliation' into 'Pride'

Daniel Ricciardo shares how he turned feelings of failure into a sense of pride after his unexpected exit from Formula 1. The former driver reflects on his career and the relief of finding life beyond the racetrack.

Daniel Ricciardo, the former Red Bull and McLaren driver, recently opened up about the rollercoaster of emotions he faced following his unexpected retirement from Formula 1 in 2024. Speaking on the official podcast _F1 Beyond The Grid_, Ricciardo revealed that while his initial feelings were of 'failure and humiliation', he has since found a sense of pride in his career.

Ricciardo was a prominent figure in F1 from his debut with HRT in 2011 until his departure in 2024, notching up eight Grand Prix wins and 24 podium finishes. Known for his daring, late-braking driving style and charismatic personality, his exit came after a challenging spell with Racing Bulls, culminating at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.

"You start racing at such a young age," Ricciardo reflected, "and over the years, you build a ruthlessness, but that also turns inward." He admitted to being harsh on himself, feeling like he was underperforming and unable to end the season on his terms. "It's then a sense of humiliation," he said, describing the pain of not being able to achieve what he once could.

Despite the initial disappointment, Ricciardo now appreciates Racing Bulls' decision to replace him with Liam Lawson. It allowed him to explore life outside F1. "Everyone's path is different," he noted, pondering whether he would have continued racing had his contract been extended indefinitely. He recalled moments of doubt, like after the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, when he seriously considered stepping away.

Ricciardo acknowledged the influence of those around him, who encouraged him to keep racing, but admitted that this sometimes drowned out his own thoughts. "I think that would have probably just continued," he mused, "and maybe I'd still be racing, which is also a scary thought." Ultimately, he found gratitude in the Racing Bulls' decision to 'pull the trigger'.

While he hasn't decided on a return to racing in another series, Ricciardo is now able to look back on his F1 career with pride. His wins in Monaco and Monza are highlights, and he's reached a place where he can reflect positively on his journey.

"In the aftermath of everything, I used words like failure and humiliation," Ricciardo said. "But now, I look back with much more of a smile." He also acknowledged the surreal nature of being one of the few to compete in F1, admitting that it can be overwhelming to reflect on.

Now in a more balanced state, Ricciardo is proud and somewhat astounded by his accomplishments. "I've won races," he said. "It's overwhelming to reflect, but now I'm in a good, even-keeled place. I'm extremely proud, shocked in many ways that it all happened."
