George Russell Delivers 'Perfect Lap' for Pole in Baku

George Russell delivered an impeccable performance in Baku, securing pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. His 'perfect lap' left Ferrari's Charles Leclerc trailing by an impressive 0.837 seconds.

While the timesheets might suggest a straightforward session for Russell, the reality was a bit more complex. He faced stiff competition from Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren throughout qualifying. With Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli making an early exit in Q1 due to an unfortunate error, the path to pole was anything but guaranteed.

Despite the pressure, Russell improved consistently in each session, ultimately setting an unbeatable time of 1m 42.526s. "It’s been a while, so it definitely feels good," Russell remarked. "It’s probably the biggest margin of my whole career, even going back to my F2 and F3 days."

Russell praised the car’s performance over the weekend, particularly on a demanding street circuit like Baku. "The car’s been feeling great this weekend, and on a track like this, when you can hook it up like that, it feels really amazing," he said.

He acknowledged the pace of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who was also fast throughout the weekend. However, a yellow flag due to Lando Norris meant Verstappen couldn’t improve his time in the final moments of Q3. "It would have been interesting to see," Russell noted, "but it was just the perfect lap at the end."

Russell benefited from a helpful slipstream behind Isack Hadjar, gaining a slight advantage on Baku’s long straights. Despite a chaotic qualifying session filled with yellow flags and lock-ups, Russell kept his cool and avoided disruptions.

Looking ahead to the race, Russell remains optimistic but cautious. "I think we’re in a great place to go for the win," he said. "But of course, this is Baku and anything can happen. Charles will be motivated to make a move at Turn 1, but I feel confident that we can go for the win."
