George Russell Highlights Ferrari's Potential Edge at Mexican GP

George Russell suggests Ferrari might have an edge at the Mexican Grand Prix due to their smaller turbo design. The high altitude of the circuit could amplify this advantage for Ferrari's power unit.

The high altitude of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez presents a unique challenge for the 2026 F1 power units, and George Russell from Mercedes sees this as a potential advantage for Ferrari. With the track sitting over 2200 meters above sea level, the conditions will directly impact car performance, especially concerning turbo lag. Russell notes that Ferrari's power unit, designed with a smaller turbo, could reduce lag and provide a significant benefit in Mexico City.

"I think turbo lag is going to be a big factor for a lot of teams this weekend," Russell remarked, pointing out that Ferrari's smaller turbo design might give them an edge. "We’re not sure as yet how challenging it will be, but can definitely foresee it being not straightforward."

Heading into the race, Russell faces the likely end of his mathematical title hopes, with teammate Kimi Antonelli needing just a ninth-place finish to secure the championship. The Mercedes team has experienced mixed results with their upgraded W17 package, which Russell described as performing within a narrow window. "It’s been a little bit strange for us since we brought this package to the car," he admitted, noting the difficulties in getting consistent performance from it.

While Antonelli secured a dominant victory in Austin, Russell's race was hampered by a five-second penalty, leaving him in eighth place. Reflecting on recent races, Russell noted the challenges faced with the new upgrades, saying, "We are seeing some things in the characteristics that just show that it performs in a very narrow window. So we need to try and widen that. And obviously, from my side, need to try and focus on getting into that window."

Mercedes hasn't won in Mexico since Lewis Hamilton's victory in 2019, and the team will be looking to overcome their recent struggles to break that streak.
