Lewis Hamilton is focusing on the next five races as a testing ground for Ferrari's future success. The team aims to close the performance gap to Red Bull and Mercedes in the coming seasons.
Lewis Hamilton is gearing up for the Mexico City Grand Prix with an eye firmly on the future, seeing the remainder of the 2026 season as a series of 'test races' for Ferrari. The British driver, who has had a successful second year with the Scuderia, is pushing the team to refine their car and processes to pose a serious challenge to Red Bull and Mercedes next year.
Hamilton, along with teammate Charles Leclerc, has propelled Ferrari to second in the Constructors’ Championship. However, Max Verstappen's recent wins for Red Bull have put pressure on Ferrari to maintain their position. Speaking at a media event in Mexico City, Hamilton emphasized the importance of using the upcoming races to evaluate and enhance Ferrari's performance.
"We want to hold on to second place, of course," Hamilton said. "But really, this is an opportunity to assess how the season has unfolded and to tweak our strategies and processes. We've already made some progress, and things are looking up."
The 2026 Ferrari has shown prowess in cornering but struggles with power unit performance compared to its rivals. Hamilton has identified this as the key area for improvement. "The engine is our top priority. We have good reliability, but if we matched the power of Mercedes and Red Bull, we’d be in the title fight," Hamilton noted. He expressed confidence in the team's efforts to close this gap, despite acknowledging the challenges ahead.
Hamilton also highlighted the need for more downforce and a broader operational window for the car. "The car is good when everything clicks, but that window is very narrow. Expanding that is crucial," he added.
With these objectives in mind, Hamilton aims to finish the season strongly, not just for the team's morale, but as a solid foundation for 2027. "Ending on a high note would be fantastic. The team and everyone at the factory deserve it, and we'll be pushing to get the most out of every race weekend," he concluded.
