Kimi Antonelli experienced a tough Azerbaijan Grand Prix, describing it as his most challenging weekend of the season. Despite setbacks, he managed a fifth-place finish and aims to bounce back in upcoming races.
Kimi Antonelli emerged from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a valuable lesson in resilience after what he described as the 'worst weekend of the season.' Starting from a disappointing 16th on the grid due to a crash in the opening phase of qualifying, Antonelli managed to climb up to fifth by the end of the race at the Baku City Circuit.
Plagued by technical issues during practice, Antonelli's misfortunes compounded with a dramatic qualifying crash. His teammate, George Russell, on the other hand, enjoyed a seamless weekend, converting pole position into a victory and trimming Antonelli’s championship lead from 81 to 66 points.
Reflecting on the tumultuous weekend, Antonelli remarked, "I think it’s one of those days where you have to be happy with P5. It was by far the worst weekend of the season. I felt a step behind, especially after the mistake in qualifying. Today was about damage limitation, and with the contact I had with Haas’ Ollie Bearman, I was carrying significant floor damage. It wasn’t easy, but I did my best."
As the F1 calendar moves on to Malaysia and Singapore, Antonelli is keen to reset and learn from Baku’s trials. "This weekend taught me a lot," he admitted. "I think my mindset wasn’t in the right place, but I’ll make sure we’re back at the right level next weekend."
With the season entering a busy final stretch, Antonelli hopes the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will stand out as a mere blip in his campaign for the championship.
