Pirelli Reveals Tyre Choices for 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at Madring
Pirelli has announced the tyre compounds for the inaugural race at the new Madring circuit in Madrid. The track promises a mix of high-speed sectors and challenging corners, with tyre management set to be key.
The 2026 Spanish Grand Prix is set to debut at the brand-new Madring circuit, and Pirelli has unveiled the tyre compounds that teams will have at their disposal. Drivers will be armed with the C2 hard, C3 medium, and C4 soft compounds—each tailored to the track's unique demands. The hard tyres will be marked in white, the mediums in yellow, and the softs in red. Additionally, the green intermediate and blue full wet tyres will be on standby, just in case the Spanish weather decides to add its twist to the weekend.
Each driver will have two sets of hards, three sets of mediums, and a generous eight sets of softs to play with. Those lucky enough to make it to Q3 will earn an extra set of softs for their troubles. In the race, assuming the track stays dry, drivers are required to use at least two different slick compounds—a rule that keeps strategy gurus on their toes.
Pirelli's preview highlights the track's fast first sector, which quickly transitions into a series of medium and low-speed corners, including the banked Turn 12. The final part of the lap throws in a few 90-degree corners, reminiscent of the challenges faced in Baku. The circuit has been designed to test tyres to their limits, with simulations and on-site visits shaping Pirelli's approach.
The Madring circuit's smooth surface offers relatively low grip, a characteristic often found on fresh asphalt. To mitigate this, the track has undergone a treatment with high-pressure water jets to remove dust and oily residues—something also done at circuits like Singapore.
From a tyre stress perspective, the Madrid circuit ranks among the top five most demanding on the calendar. The 'Monumental' corner is particularly noteworthy, generating the highest vertical load of the season due to its banking and length. Drivers will need to balance the pursuit of grip with strategic positioning for overtaking opportunities.
With its mix of high-speed sections and demanding corners, the Madring promises to test both drivers and their machines. As teams prepare for this new challenge, tyre management will undoubtedly be a critical component of any successful strategy.
