Cadillac Considers Driver Line-Up Shake-Up for 2027

Cadillac boss Marcin Budkowski hints at possible driver changes for the 2027 F1 season. While Sergio Perez seems secure, Valtteri Bottas faces scrutiny amid whispers of other contenders.

Cadillac's leadership, under Marcin Budkowski, seems open to potential driver changes for the 2027 Formula 1 season. During a press conference in Texas, Budkowski was notably non-committal about the future of the current line-up of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, fueling speculation about possible shifts.

Cadillac entered Formula 1 with a veteran duo in Perez and Bottas, both seasoned race winners with impressive resumes. Perez had a four-year stint at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, while Bottas spent five years racing with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. Their experience was intended to expedite Cadillac's learning curve in the sport.

The exact terms of their contracts with Cadillac have never been fully disclosed, but insiders suggest Perez is on a two-year contract with an option for a third, and Bottas has an option deal for 2027. While Perez appears secure in his seat, Bottas has come under more scrutiny. His performance has been overshadowed by Perez's, leading to questions about his future with the team.

Cadillac has also been nurturing young talent, with Formula 2 driver Colton Herta taking part in FP1 sessions. Herta is closing in on the super licence points needed for a Formula 1 seat, suggesting Cadillac is keeping an eye on its options.

Bottas's recent performance, particularly at the Singapore Grand Prix, where brake management issues left him trailing nearly a lap behind Perez, adds to the uncertainty. Bottas admitted to some frustration, noting setup and strategy missteps contributed to his struggles. However, he remains focused on improving, especially with another home race on the horizon for the team.

The potential arrival of Esteban Ocon on the market has also been noted, but Cadillac doesn't seem convinced he's a significant enough upgrade to justify a lineup change. Instead, the team appears to be urging Bottas to match Perez more closely if he wants to secure his future.

Budkowski, when asked about Perez's performance, praised his energy and motivation, highlighting his significant contribution to the team's progress. He noted Perez's efforts both on and off the track, emphasizing the experienced driver's hunger and drive.

While Budkowski acknowledged receiving calls from various drivers and managers, he was tight-lipped about specifics, suggesting details on driver contracts would be handled through official channels.

Herta's FP1 performance at COTA was praised by Budkowski, who noted the importance of collecting data and preparing for upcoming races. When questioned about Herta's super licence status, Budkowski's response hinted at the team's interest, stating, "It’s a point away."

As Cadillac navigates its path in Formula 1, the team seems to be weighing its options carefully, with Perez's position appearing solid while Bottas faces the pressure to step up.
