Ralf Schumacher Backs Fernando Alonso's Critique of Alex Albon in F1

Ralf Schumacher supports Fernando Alonso's criticism of Alex Albon following their clash at the US Grand Prix, highlighting Albon's lack of composure compared to top drivers. Schumacher also questions Williams' decision to extend Albon's contract for 2027, suggesting a younger driver might have been a wiser choice.

In the aftermath of the 2026 United States Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso expressed his frustration with Alex Albon following a collision at Turn 11 on the opening lap. The incident, which saw Albon’s ambitious maneuver result in damage to Alonso’s car, was deemed a racing incident by the stewards, leaving Alonso less than pleased. Ralf Schumacher has joined Alonso in criticizing the Williams driver, agreeing with the Spaniard's assessment of Albon's shortcomings.

Schumacher, speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, didn't mince words regarding Albon's performance. "Williams is starting afresh next year, and as James Vowles frequently points out, the clock resets," Schumacher noted, highlighting the team's transitional phase. "Developing a young driver takes time, and decisions about Albon's future will need to be made soon," he added.

Schumacher contends that Albon is missing the composure seen in top-tier drivers like Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. "Albon doesn't want to be overtaken, and he makes these aggressive moves to prove he hasn't lost his fighting spirit," Schumacher explained. He believes this lack of composure is what sets Albon apart from drivers like Alonso, Verstappen, and Hamilton, who manage to avoid costly mistakes in close combat.

In addition to critiquing Albon's on-track demeanor, Schumacher also questioned Williams' decision to extend Albon's contract through 2027. As Williams' longest-serving driver, Albon's contract extension was meant to provide stability alongside Carlos Sainz. However, Schumacher suggests that Williams might have benefited from investing in a younger driver. "Albon is making more mistakes, overbraking, and often complaining over the radio," Schumacher observed, noting a change from the "gallant, reserved young man" Albon once was.

Schumacher predicts that if Albon's performance doesn't improve, he may find himself out of favor with other teams after his tenure at Williams. "Williams should have turned to a young driver for next year," Schumacher concluded, suggesting that the team's current strategy might not yield the best results.

This critique from Schumacher aligns with Alonso's earlier comments about the quality of drivers in the lower third of the grid. While Alonso's remarks have sparked debate, Schumacher's agreement with them underscores a shared concern about Albon's future performance and Williams' strategic direction.
