Ugo Ugochukwu clinched the 2026 Formula 3 championship in Madrid, becoming the first American to do so. Meanwhile, Tuukka Taponen celebrated his inaugural F3 victory in the season's final race.
Ugo Ugochukwu has etched his name in the Formula 3 history books by becoming the 2026 Drivers' Champion after a nail-biting finale in Madrid. He finished second in the last race, enough to surpass Freddie Slater and secure his championship victory.
Across the paddock, Tuukka Taponen had his own reason to celebrate. The Finnish driver took his maiden F3 win during the Madrid Feature Race 2, marking a noteworthy day for MP Motorsport. Starting from pole, Taponen maintained his lead into Turn 1, a feat no other driver managed over the weekend at the Madring.
Taponen kept his cool under pressure, holding off Ugochukwu's Campos Racing car, which stayed close enough to use DRS but not quite close enough to overtake. A late Safety Car threatened to shake things up, but Taponen held firm during the final lap sprint to clinch his first victory in the category.
With this result, Ugochukwu ends the season with 159 points, enough to take the championship, while Slater finishes second with 145 points. Taponen's win also elevated him to third place in the overall standings.
Pedro Clerot also had a solid showing, finishing third on the podium for Rodin Motorsport. This followed his victory in Feature Race 1 earlier in the weekend, adding another successful chapter to his season.
Meanwhile, Freddie Slater, representing TRIDENT and Audi's development program, ended up eighth in the race, which was not enough to hold onto his championship lead. Thus, he concludes the season as the runner-up after a fierce year-long battle.
