Christian Horner reveals his ideal F1 team, pairing Max Verstappen with Nigel Mansell. Despite considering legends like Senna and Clark, Horner chooses Mansell for his dream lineup.
Christian Horner, Red Bull's former team principal, has certainly had his share of working with Formula 1's elite, including Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. Under his leadership, both drivers clinched four drivers' titles each, marking some of the sport's most dominant periods. However, it seems Horner has a soft spot for a particular combination when it comes to his dream F1 team.
Despite initially opposing Verstappen's promotion to Red Bull from Toro Rosso in 2016, Horner witnessed the Dutchman's rapid ascent, starting with a victory on his debut in Barcelona and culminating in four consecutive titles from 2021 to 2024. This success surely cements Verstappen's place in any dream lineup.
Interestingly, when asked about his ideal team pairing, Horner bypassed current stars and even his own prodigy Vettel. Instead, he opted for Nigel Mansell, the 1992 F1 world champion, as Verstappen's teammate. Mansell, known for his tenacity and racing prowess, secured his sole F1 title with Williams and later conquered IndyCar.
Horner shared his thoughts on the 'Kidd in a Sweet Shop' podcast, expressing a fondness for mixing eras in his hypothetical team. He considered legends like Ayrton Senna, Jim Clark, and Jackie Stewart but ultimately believed that pairing Mansell with Verstappen would be the most thrilling. "It would be fun to put a Mansell next to a Max," Horner mused.
Mansell's record speaks for itself. He remains one of the oldest race winners in F1 history, with a final victory in Australia in 1994 at 41. His pole position at Silverstone in 1992, nearly two seconds faster than his rivals, still stands out in the annals of the sport.
As for which team would host this dream duo, Horner's heart leans towards Red Bull, citing his deep connection with the team. Yet, he also fondly remembers his admiration for Williams during Mansell's glory days, recalling the iconic 'red five' on Mansell's car.
In a world of hypothetical F1 scenarios, Horner's choice of Verstappen and Mansell certainly conjures up an intriguing mix of talent and eras. Fans can only imagine the spectacle of such a pairing on today's circuits.
