Ferrari Lags Behind Audi in Engine Development for 2026

Ferrari's internal combustion engine for 2026 is reportedly struggling compared to Audi's, despite Ferrari's decades of experience. The Italian team is grappling with reliability issues and last-minute changes, while Audi's debut shows promise.

Ferrari, a name synonymous with Formula 1 racing heritage, is finding itself in an unexpected predicament as it faces engine development challenges for the 2026 season. Despite their longstanding presence in the sport, Ferrari's internal combustion engine is reportedly not up to scratch compared to Audi's, a newcomer to F1 this year. While the Maranello-based team has concentrated on aerodynamics, leading to victories for Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, they seem to have taken their eye off the ball in engine development.

Julianne Cerasoli, a respected journalist, has noted that Ferrari's power unit is performing worse than Audi's—an ironic twist given that Audi only entered the sport this year under new regulations. Ferrari's recent decision to abandon a new turbocharger at the eleventh hour, after significant development effort, highlights their ongoing struggles with reliability.

Audi, on the other hand, has strategically halted their power unit development until 2027, with plans to adapt to a shift in power distribution between internal combustion and battery from 50/50 to 60/40. This calculated move suggests Audi is playing the long game, aiming to be competitive by 2028.

For Ferrari, the challenges are not just technical. They have not secured an F1 title since Kimi Raikkonen's triumph in 2007—a 19-year drought for a team of their stature. The fact that Audi, with their fresh entry, is outperforming Ferrari paints a concerning picture for team principal Fred Vasseur. He faces the daunting task of bringing Ferrari back to the forefront of the championship battle.

Cerasoli's insights underline the urgency for Ferrari to improve their engine performance, especially as their customer team, Haas, is also expected to benefit from any advancements. However, whether Haas can capitalize on these improvements remains uncertain. Ferrari's strategic decisions, particularly around race strategies, have also been under scrutiny, with calls for a more coherent approach if they are to reclaim their former glory.

As the 2026 season progresses, all eyes will be on Ferrari to see if they can address these issues and compete with the likes of Audi, who have quickly become a formidable presence in the paddock. The pressure is mounting for Ferrari, a team with a legacy to uphold and a future to secure.
