FIA Investigates George Russell Over Post-Race Absence at Mexican GP

George Russell faces an FIA investigation for skipping mandatory media duties after the Mexican Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver had a mixed race, finishing sixth but falling out of title contention.

George Russell, the Mercedes driver, has been called to meet with FIA stewards after failing to fulfill his post-race media obligations at the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix. This inquiry follows his absence from the required media interactions, which all drivers must attend unless they finish in the top three, in which case they participate in the FIA press conference. Despite Mercedes indicating that Russell would not be appearing in the media pen, no official exemption was granted. As a result, the matter is now under FIA investigation.

Heading into the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Russell's championship hopes were exceedingly slim, with his teammate Kimi Antonelli needing only a ninth-place finish to clinch the title. Antonelli exceeded expectations, securing a podium finish and becoming the youngest champion in Formula 1 history. Meanwhile, Russell ended the race in sixth place, dropping to fourth in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Russell's day was further complicated by an on-track incident where he tangled with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, causing Hadjar to spin. For this, Russell received a 10-second penalty after the stewards reviewed various data and video evidence. They determined that Russell, attempting to overtake on the inside at Turn 6, did not have the right to the corner as his car's front axle was not level with Hadjar's mirror, leading to the penalty.

Post-penalty, Russell rejoined the race in eighth place, eventually climbing to sixth as others pitted. However, his final standing remains under the shadow of the ongoing investigation into his absence from media duties.

Russell's absence from the media pen adds another layer to his challenging race weekend, marking a notable point of interest in the aftermath of the Mexican Grand Prix.
