Ferrari's Fred Vasseur has stepped into the spotlight to address rumors about his tenure amid speculation fueled by Christian Horner's comments. He emphasizes the importance of stability within the team and the full backing he has from Ferrari's leadership.
Being the Team Principal of Ferrari in Formula 1 is akin to living under a microscope, a fact Fred Vasseur is well aware of. Recently, rumors about his future at the team gathered steam, especially after Christian Horner, former Red Bull chief, expressed an interest in a role with the Italian outfit. This naturally led to whispers about Vasseur's position being under threat.
Ferrari, however, quickly moved to quell the speculation. Ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend in Malaysia, the team held a media call to assert their confidence in Vasseur, backed by Chairman John Elkann and CEO Benedetto Vigna. The show of support was further bolstered by drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, both expressing their faith in Vasseur's leadership.
In a Friday press conference at Sepang, Vasseur appeared alongside Alpine's Flavio Briatore and Williams' James Vowles. When asked why Ferrari felt the need to hold the media call, Vasseur pointed to the incessant rumors. "When you see the noise and all the rumors in the press, we need to work in serenity," Vasseur explained. "The statement was mandatory to focus on the task at hand without distraction."
Hamilton praised Vasseur as a "fantastic leader," while also noting areas for potential improvement within Ferrari. Vasseur acknowledged that team structures must evolve, underscoring that success should never be seen as a final state. "The dynamic we have is positive, but it’s not enough. We want to win more," he stated.
The Ferrari boss emphasized unity, saying, "In good moments, we win as a team; in bad moments, we suffer as a team." He dismissed the notion of blaming individuals when things go awry, stressing the importance of collective effort.
Vasseur also touched on the scrutiny that comes with his role, stating, "When you take the role, you know the positives and negatives." He wasn't surprised by the pressure but did note that personal attacks cross a line. "I’m here to defend my team. When we struggle, I’m there to defend them," he asserted.
Despite the rumors, Vasseur remains focused on the task at hand—steering Ferrari back to the top of the championship. The team has had a promising start to the season, and while recent races have been tough, Vasseur is optimistic about future developments.
In summary, Fred Vasseur is not fazed by the rumor mill. Strong backing from within Ferrari and a commitment to continuous improvement are his focus, as he navigates the pressures of leading one of F1's most iconic teams.
