Fred Vasseur Assures Leclerc: Ferrari Upgrades Are on the Horizon

Ferrari's weekend in Azerbaijan was something of a mixed bag, with Charles Leclerc finishing fourth and Lewis Hamilton sixth. The team, which has already tasted victory twice this year, found itself grappling with familiar issues — namely, a lack of straight-line speed that has been the season's Achilles' heel. Leclerc, who often excels on the streets of Baku, managed an impressive second in qualifying, much to the team's surprise given the car's current shortcomings. However, come race day, he was quickly swallowed up by the competition, dropping to fifth in the opening laps. A mistake by Oscar Piastri later in the race allowed him to regain fourth, but he was never truly in contention for the podium.

The team's principal, Fred Vasseur, acknowledged the challenges. "We were genuinely surprised to be on the front row," he said, noting the engine demands of the Baku circuit. "We knew it would be tough from the start, especially after a Safety Car restart." Despite maximizing their potential with fourth and sixth places, Vasseur admitted that these results were not satisfactory for Ferrari's standards.

The struggles weren't solely about speed. Hamilton, who joined Ferrari this season, cited tire temperature issues as a significant factor in his performance. "We had similar problems at Monza," Vasseur explained. "The pace was decent, but we kept losing positions on the straights."

Ferrari's lack of recent developments has been a source of frustration, particularly for Leclerc, who has been vocal about the need for upgrades. Vasseur assured that improvements are on the way, although he remained coy about the timeline. "I won't give you an exact date, but soon," he promised.

Vasseur hinted that the team's upcoming races might be less punishing on the car's weaknesses, allowing them to compete more effectively. "There's a convergence of performance on the chassis," he noted. "You can improve that more quickly than the engine."

It's not just Ferrari feeling the heat; Vasseur pointed out that rivals have made strides, reducing any advantage Ferrari might have had with their chassis. "McLaren made changes this weekend, and Mercedes is expected to do so soon," he said, suggesting that the development race is as intense as ever.

As the season progresses, Vasseur and Ferrari are already looking ahead, balancing immediate upgrades with planning for next year’s regulations. "Even if it's a continuation, we have to anticipate changes," Vasseur explained.
