Lewis Hamilton expressed surprise at Ferrari's sudden drop in performance during the final qualifying session at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. Despite a strong showing in practice and early qualifying rounds, Ferrari couldn't maintain their pace, leaving Hamilton puzzled by the gains of other teams.
Lewis Hamilton found himself rather puzzled after the final qualifying session at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. Ferrari had seemed poised to clinch pole position, especially after Hamilton topped the practice sessions. Their new upgrades appeared to be doing the trick, but things took a baffling turn in Q3, leaving Hamilton starting the race from P5.
Hamilton was heard over the radio expressing his surprise at the lap times of his competitors, saying, "These guys must be turning it up for that last Q3, because where did the time go?" In his post-qualifying chat with Sky Sports, Hamilton reiterated that his Ferrari felt great, yet somehow, others managed to find that extra gear. "Firstly, we did a really good job overnight, the car felt really good and competitive, then in Q1 and Q2 it felt really strong and that we were in the fight," he explained.
Despite no significant changes to the car in Q3, Ferrari's performance didn't match that of their rivals. "The car was just as good, we didn’t make any changes. We didn’t flip the car upside down for Q3. It was a really good lap, those guys just somehow took another step. I don’t know what it is," Hamilton wondered aloud. He also acknowledged the usual power deficit Ferrari faces against the likes of Red Bull and Mercedes, particularly on the straights. "Our car is as good as theirs through the corners, but we lose it down the straights," he admitted.
Yet, there's a silver lining. Both Hamilton and his teammate Charles Leclerc can still take heart from the performance of Ferrari’s upgrade package in Austin. Race simulations in practice were promising, indicating that victory might still be within reach. Hamilton, who has a history of strong performances at the Circuit of the Americas and has won here five times, remains optimistic. His track record includes securing two World Championship titles in Austin, so there's hope for a strong showing on race day.
In a season where every detail counts, Hamilton's suspicions reflect the competitive tension between teams constantly looking for that edge, whether it's through technical prowess or strategic genius. As the grid lines up for the race, fans will be keen to see if Ferrari can convert their potential into podium success despite the qualifying hiccup.
