Lewis Hamilton demonstrated impressive speed during the final practice session at the U.S. Grand Prix, setting the fastest lap despite track limit issues affecting his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen managed to squeeze between the Ferraris, but it was Hamilton who stole the spotlight heading into qualifying.
Lewis Hamilton is looking particularly sharp as he heads into qualifying for the United States Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver topped the timesheets in the final practice session, while teammate Charles Leclerc's best effort was erased due to track limits infractions, despite the FIA's decision to relax certain boundaries.
During the session, Red Bull's Max Verstappen managed to split the Ferraris, but it was Hamilton who ultimately took the top spot. The session began with Sergio Perez setting an initial benchmark on hard tyres, but Hamilton soon took control with a blistering lap on softs, clocking in at 1:36.716.
The track limits have been a hot topic, with 207 laps being deleted in earlier runs. In response, the FIA widened the white lines at Turns 12, 15, and 20, and adjusted the blue line marking the absolute track limit. Additionally, asphalt grinding at Turn 19 aimed to smooth out some troublesome bumps.
Verstappen, using medium tyres, initially set the pace, going half a second clear of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. Leclerc, also on mediums, temporarily moved into second place but saw his lap time deleted for overstepping the track limits.
Hamilton reclaimed the lead with a 1:35.561, narrowly edging out Verstappen, who was dealing with some gear shift issues and had to retreat for a new front wing. Meanwhile, Leclerc continued to grapple with track limits, finding himself without a valid lap time for much of the session.
As the session progressed, qualifying simulations saw Kimi Antonelli briefly take the lead on soft tyres, only to see his lap time struck off for a track limits violation at Turn 9. Hamilton, undeterred, pushed into the 1:34s, while Leclerc's struggles continued as another promising lap was deleted at Turn 10.
The final minutes saw Hamilton hold onto his top position despite a brief encounter with a slow-moving Audi, driven by Gabriel Bortoleto. Verstappen ended up second, and Leclerc settled for third after a frustrating session of deleted laps.
In the end, Hamilton's pace in FP3 sets him up as a strong contender for qualifying, while Leclerc will aim to put his track limits woes behind him and focus on the main event.
