Kimi Antonelli acknowledges George Russell's recent win has given him momentum, posing a significant challenge for the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix. Antonelli remains optimistic about learning from past mistakes and is eager to capitalize on new upgrades.
Kimi Antonelli, still holding a 66-point lead in the drivers' standings, is acutely aware of the threat now posed by his Mercedes teammate, George Russell. Fresh off a victory in Azerbaijan, Russell's recent performance has not gone unnoticed by Antonelli, who anticipates a "tough challenge" as they head into the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
The Azerbaijan race weekend was a mixed bag for Mercedes. While Russell clinched pole position and ultimately won the race, Antonelli had a rougher time, starting from P16 after a qualifying mishap. Despite this, he managed to climb to fifth place by the end of the race, though Russell's win slightly closed the gap in the drivers' standings.
Reflecting on his Baku experience, Antonelli admitted, "Last weekend was probably the worst from my side of the season." Still, he found value in the lessons learned. "It was a very strange race where I consciously tried not to take any risks and just drive under the limit," he said, describing it as a necessary approach after such a disrupted start.
Antonelli is now gearing up for Bahrain with a refreshed mindset. "There's a big opportunity to score big points," he expressed. "Of course, the goal is always to win, but George has been doing great, and it's going to be a tough challenge."
Mercedes is set to introduce an upgrade package for the W17 in Sepang, which Antonelli is eager to test. "I’ve just done the track walk, and the track looks amazing," the 20-year-old noted, emphasizing the challenge posed by the abrasive tarmac. The upgrades, he hopes, will provide more grip and downforce, enhancing the car's performance.
On a personal note, Antonelli sees the upcoming race as a critical test. "I think this track is going to be a really good test for me," he commented, highlighting the importance of mastering the long corners without over-slowing the car. "I did some laps on the sim and it felt good, but we'll see on the real track."
Despite the setbacks in Baku, Antonelli remains focused on leveraging the upcoming upgrades and his learnings to maintain his lead. "It looks pretty cool, the car with the upgrades. I’m really looking forward to it, and hopefully it’s going to make us even faster," he concluded, ready for the challenge Bahrain presents.
