George Russell sees Red Bull as the top contender after Verstappen's recent wins, but Kimi Antonelli isn't convinced. Antonelli believes Mercedes' potential remains untapped, pointing to their underutilized upgrades.
George Russell has recently suggested that Red Bull has become the team to beat, following Max Verstappen's successive triumphs. However, his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli, isn't buying into that narrative just yet. He believes the real issue might be Mercedes' own struggles to maximize their upgraded W17's capabilities—something he hopes will change at the United States Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen's recent performances have been a showcase of his skill, with victories in Bahrain and Singapore. After Russell's unfortunate crash during the Sprint in Singapore, Verstappen had an unchallenged run to victory. He followed this with another win on Sunday, leaving Ferrari's attempts at strategic innovation in the dust. Antonelli finished on the podium, while Russell battled through the field from a back-of-the-grid penalty to finish ninth.
Post-race, Russell expressed his concerns, noting Red Bull's impressive performance across three different circuits and labeling them as the team to beat. Yet, when asked about this in the press conference alongside Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, Antonelli offered a more nuanced perspective.
"I think it's mostly about us not fully exploiting our new package," Antonelli commented, contrasting Russell's view. "Red Bull has indeed made significant strides, and Max seems quite at ease with the car, but the real challenge is within our own team. We see potential gains, but the current setup is sensitive and requires precision."
Antonelli indicated that the upcoming race in Austin offers more practice sessions, which could be crucial for Mercedes to fine-tune their setup and fully harness the car's potential. "The team did an exceptional job this weekend, and it's a foundation to build upon. We're optimistic about unlocking more performance," he added.
As Antonelli heads to Austin, he stands 102 points ahead of Russell and could clinch his first world championship title. His focus remains on ensuring Mercedes can capitalize on their advancements and challenge Red Bull's perceived dominance.
