Lando Norris Rates Kimi Antonelli Above George Russell in 2026

Lando Norris has praised Kimi Antonelli, suggesting the young driver has outperformed George Russell this season. Antonelli is poised to become the youngest-ever Formula 1 champion at the United States Grand Prix.

Lando Norris has offered high praise for Kimi Antonelli, comparing him favorably to George Russell. Norris, who has raced against Russell in junior categories, remarked that Antonelli has been operating "two levels above" Russell throughout the current season. The two Mercedes drivers have been locked in a tight battle for the championship, but Antonelli's performance has stood out.

As the Formula 1 circus rolls into the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli finds himself on the cusp of history. Should the results go his way, he could become the youngest-ever Drivers' Champion. Norris, still technically in contention but aware his reign as World Champion is likely ending, reflected on Antonelli's remarkable rise.

Having competed alongside Russell for much of his career, Norris has always held him in high regard, even during Russell's early days with Williams. However, Antonelli's meteoric climb this season has surprised many, especially as Russell was initially favored to dominate in 2026.

"It's impressive what he's achieved at such a young age," Norris said of Antonelli in Austin. "In just his second year, he's set to become the youngest world champion. That's pretty incredible."

Norris noted that while Antonelli had a respectable first season, his ability to step up this year has been noteworthy. "He was competing against George, who's very good and has performed well, particularly with the last generation of cars against Lewis. Yet, Kimi's made a significant leap in understanding and optimizing the car, handling pressure, and minimizing mistakes in both qualifying and races. He's consistently outperformed his teammate," Norris stated.

For Antonelli to clinch the title this weekend, he needs to win the race with Lewis Hamilton finishing fifth or lower, and Russell ninth or lower. If successful, Antonelli will break Sebastian Vettel's record as the youngest champion by three years. Antonelli, who was just four years old during Vettel's 2010 victory, humorously admitted to having no recollection of it. "I remember playing with Hot Wheels back then," he quipped.

With the season nearing its climax, all eyes are on Antonelli as he potentially enters the record books. Meanwhile, Norris and others in the paddock recognize the young Italian's exceptional talent and the impact he has already made in Formula 1.
