Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets in the second practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix, beating Lando Norris and George Russell. The session saw a mix of rookie appearances, minor collisions, and mechanical issues.
Charles Leclerc showcased Ferrari's pace on Friday at the Mexico City Grand Prix, setting the fastest times in both practice sessions. The second practice was particularly eventful, with Leclerc edging out McLaren's Lando Norris and Mercedes' George Russell.
The afternoon began with ten regular drivers stepping aside to allow rookies some track time in FP1, leaving the more experienced drivers eager to make up for lost time in FP2. This anticipation led to a crowded pit lane when the session started at 4 PM local time.
Haas driver Esteban Ocon was among the first on track, only to report a lack of power steering on his initial laps. He returned to the pits alongside teammate Ollie Bearman, who briefly stopped on track. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen set an early benchmark with a time of 1:20.474 on soft tyres, only to be surpassed by Arvid Lindblad and Isack Hadjar.
Leclerc's opening laps were not without drama, as he nearly lost control of his Ferrari, yet he managed to post a competitive time. Lewis Hamilton initially led the session for Ferrari with a 1:18.741, but Leclerc soon outperformed him by nearly half a second, dodging the lock-ups that plagued many drivers, including Norris.
The session wasn't short on incidents. Traffic caused tension, particularly between Verstappen and Liam Lawson. Their side-by-side encounter through Turn 12 resulted in contact and scattered debris, prompting a brief red flag. Lawson was vocal about the incident, claiming Verstappen "literally drove into me."
As the track cleared, focus returned to lap times. Norris temporarily claimed the top spot for McLaren, pushing Leclerc to second as the Monegasque struggled with wide moments and lock-ups on the soft tyres. Ferrari's session took another hit when Hamilton was forced to stop on track due to a power issue, prompting a Virtual Safety Car.
Leclerc, however, restored some pride for Ferrari by reclaiming the lead with a 1:17.827, just ahead of Norris and standings leader Kimi Antonelli. Russell squeezed into third, a mere 0.003 seconds behind Norris.
Ultimately, no one could surpass Leclerc's time, leaving him fastest at the end of Friday's running. Norris, Russell, Antonelli, and Verstappen completed the top five, with Hadjar leading the second Red Bull in sixth.
The top ten was rounded out by Lindblad, Alpine's Pierre Gasly, Lawson, and Oscar Piastri. Hamilton narrowly missed out due to his early exit and was followed by Fernando Alonso, the Haas duo of Ocon and Bearman, and Audi's Nico Hulkenberg.
Further down the order, Franco Colapinto finished ahead of Carlos Sainz, with Sergio Perez, Alex Albon, Lance Stroll, Valtteri Bottas, and Gabriel Bortoleto completing the standings. Bortoleto managed a few laps after Audi resolved a technical glitch.
With the first day of action over, teams and drivers will regroup for Free Practice 3 on Saturday morning, leading into the all-important qualifying session in the afternoon.
