Max Verstappen Voices Displeasure Over Red Bull's US GP Woes

Max Verstappen expressed frustration with Red Bull's strategy, technical issues, and pit-stop performance after finishing third at the United States Grand Prix. Despite making the podium, Verstappen felt the team missed opportunities due to poor tire choices and inconsistent engine behavior.

Max Verstappen had a podium finish at the United States Grand Prix, but it was hardly a smooth ride. The Red Bull driver was vocal about a host of issues that plagued his race in Austin, from strategy missteps to technical glitches. After launching on soft tires from the front row, Verstappen was outmaneuvered by Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who opted for a one-stop strategy and cruised to victory. Meanwhile, Verstappen's two-stop plan left him trailing behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Verstappen's frustration was palpable as he recounted the day's misfortunes. "Pretty frustrating to be honest. Just not a really good race for us," he remarked post-race. The choice of soft tires proved to be a misjudgment, compounded by a nagging engine braking issue. "The softer compounds today were not really working that well," he noted, adding that the team failed to adapt to the track's conditions, sticking to a strategy that had worked in previous races.

The Dutchman also lamented the power unit's erratic performance, which disrupted his driving rhythm. "Every lap, every corner, different behaviour," he said, highlighting how these inconsistencies hindered his ability to push the car to its limits. A slow pit-stop only added to his woes.

When asked why the RB22 seemed off the pace compared to recent performances, Verstappen offered a candid assessment. "We are balanced as a car. We are not the fastest in high speed. We are not the fastest in low speed," he explained, suggesting that the car was simply average at a track that demanded excellence in at least one area. "If we chose different tyres, probably we could have maybe been second," he mused, but acknowledged that such hindsight is of little comfort.

Communication issues compounded the chaos, as Verstappen struggled with radio problems for the second consecutive race. "Maybe we just start communicating in sign language. It’s probably cheaper as well," he quipped, underscoring his exasperation.

Despite all these challenges, Verstappen was clear that the team had not maximized their potential. "The issues, of course, don’t help, but I think also the strategy that we did with the tyre choices that we made, yeah, they were just not good," he said. With the title now out of reach following the United States GP, Verstappen and Red Bull have some soul-searching to do before their next outing.
