Oliver Bearman discusses how teaming up with Kimi Antonelli in Formula 2 has equipped him with valuable lessons for his current role at Haas. Despite a challenging season with PREMA, Bearman credits the experience for enhancing his adaptability and perseverance.
Oliver Bearman has opened up about the valuable lessons he gained while racing alongside Andrea Kimi Antonelli at PREMA's Formula 2 team in 2024, which he now applies to his role at Haas. The two drivers' paths intersected when Mercedes placed Antonelli in PREMA's second F2 seat, a team known for its success with past champions like Charles Leclerc, Mick Schumacher, and Oscar Piastri. Bearman, backed by Ferrari, was already in his second year with the team.
Both Bearman and Antonelli entered the 2024 season with high hopes of competing for the F2 title. However, the introduction of a new car for the season caught PREMA off guard, and the team struggled to find competitive pace. Bearman didn't secure his first win until the 13th race at the Red Bull Ring Sprint, while Antonelli claimed victory at Silverstone in challenging wet conditions during the 15th race.
Reflecting on the season, Bearman explained how the experience shaped him: "We expected to be rivals for the championship, but the reality was far from it. The season became a lesson in teamwork as we worked together to make something of it despite our struggles." The lessons in resilience and collaboration have proven invaluable as Bearman now navigates the challenges with Haas, a team also striving to improve its competitiveness.
Bearman recalled his early encounters with Antonelli in Formula 4, noting, "I first met him when we raced together in F4. I was winning the championship, and he joined for the last few races. The following year, he went on to win." Their journey continued in F2, where despite high expectations, they faced an uphill battle. "It was an eye-opener for both of us, expecting to fight for wins but having to work together to salvage the season," Bearman said.
After his stint in F2, Antonelli quickly ascended to Formula 1 with Mercedes, stepping in after Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari. Bearman, meanwhile, was loaned to Haas by Ferrari. Despite the contrasting trajectories, Bearman appreciates the grounding experience with Antonelli, using it to bolster Haas's efforts.
As Bearman looks toward a potential third year with Haas, he remains optimistic about the future. Meanwhile, Antonelli is on the brink of becoming the youngest-ever F1 champion, possibly clinching the title at the upcoming United States Grand Prix. Bearman's time with Antonelli at PREMA continues to influence his approach and adaptability in the ever-demanding world of Formula 1.
