Liam Lawson has ruffled feathers among F1 drivers with his aggressive style, but Racing Bulls staff argue his reputation is unjust. Despite on-track clashes, Lawson is seen as a mentor to junior drivers within the team.
Liam Lawson, the Racing Bulls driver, seems to have a knack for irritating some of the seasoned figures in Formula 1, especially during the early stages of his career. Notably, he had a run-in with Fernando Alonso, a two-time world champion, after the 2024 USA Sprint race. Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, was less than pleased with Lawson's tactics. Just a week later, Lawson managed to collide with Sergio Perez in Mexico, earning a less-than-flattering 'idiot' label from Perez over team radio. To cap it off, Lawson gave Perez an impromptu hand gesture during the race.
Fast forward a year, and Lawson was still making waves — not necessarily the good kind. He was handed penalty points for incidents with several drivers, including Lance Stroll, Nico Hulkenberg, Alonso again, and Oliver Bearman. Interestingly, he was the sole driver to be penalized for erratic defensive driving that year. This string of incidents might explain why Lawson’s popularity among his colleagues is reportedly lacking, as noted by Blick. Despite this, those within his team at Racing Bulls view things a bit differently.
Team insiders have spoken to The New Zealand Herald about Lawson's mentorship role with Isack Hadjar, highlighting his off-track contributions as equally valuable as his on-track performances. His efforts extend to supporting Arvid Lindblad, this season's only rookie. Racing Bulls believe Lawson’s willingness to guide promising junior drivers, even when it might affect his own standing, is a testament to his character.
The comparison to Max Verstappen has surfaced, with former teammate Alex Albon describing Verstappen as the most 'misunderstood' driver in F1. Verstappen, much like Lawson, is known for pushing the limits but is respected by those who have raced alongside him. Lawson, similarly, is regarded as one of the most selfless drivers in the paddock, despite his aggressive racing style.
In the cutthroat environment of Red Bull, sharing insights and advice with teammates who could one day take your seat is not the norm, yet Lawson does just that. With Red Bull eyeing future talents like Nikola Tsolov, a choice between Lawson and Lindblad may eventually be on the cards. However, this decision is not expected until 2028 at the earliest, as Racing Bulls plan to maintain their current driver lineup for the next season.
