Verstappen Claims Long-Awaited Singapore Victory as Ferrari's Strategy Stumbles

Max Verstappen finally clinched his first Singapore Grand Prix win, while Ferrari's strategic missteps cost Lewis Hamilton a podium finish. The eventful weekend also featured McLaren's internal clash and Andrea Kimi Antonelli extending his championship lead.

Max Verstappen's 2026 campaign gained further momentum at the Singapore Grand Prix, where he secured a long-awaited victory over Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli. Verstappen's triumph at Marina Bay marked his tenth attempt at conquering the circuit and was a significant addition to his illustrious career.

The weekend was packed with drama, including McLaren's intra-team collision and a strategic blunder by Ferrari that saw Lewis Hamilton drop from a potential podium to sixth place. Verstappen's performance was nothing short of dominant, sweeping through Sprint Qualifying, the Sprint race, and the main event with an unyielding grip on the proceedings.

This victory propels Verstappen to fourth in the Drivers' Championship and positions Red Bull closely behind McLaren in the constructors' standings. "The last few races have been really positive for us," Verstappen remarked. "We have a lot of motivation in the team to try and deliver even more results."

Charles Leclerc, Verstappen's main rival over the weekend, started second and finished in the same position. Meanwhile, Hamilton's choice of medium tyres proved costly as the race unfolded. Initially, Hamilton's strategy seemed a potential masterstroke against the softer-tyred Verstappen and Leclerc, but it soon became apparent that the softer compound was the superior choice. A missed pit call during a Virtual Safety Car period compounded Hamilton's woes, leaving him vulnerable in the closing laps as Antonelli, Lando Norris, and Oscar Piastri overtook him.

After the race, Hamilton took responsibility for the mishap: "I decided to stay out and try to hold track position to the end, but in the closing laps, I was struggling massively with tyre degradation. A painful lesson today, but I take full responsibility for the decisions I made."

Kimi Antonelli, on the other hand, continued to extend his lead in the championship. Though not a contender for victory in Singapore, Antonelli's consistent performance and strategic overtaking during the race netted him a third-place finish. With a 102-point lead over teammate George Russell, Antonelli is inching closer to securing his first drivers' title.

Russell's weekend was a mix of misfortune and perseverance. Starting from the back due to power unit changes, he initially led the wet Sprint but ended up in the pit wall. On Sunday, he managed to climb to ninth, though his title hopes are now virtually extinguished.

The McLaren camp experienced its own share of fireworks during the Sprint as Norris and Piastri collided on the final lap. Though no further action was taken by the stewards, Team Principal Andrea Stella expressed his disappointment: "I am, if anything, disappointed."

The Singapore GP, ever a glamorous event, saw appearances from celebrities like Paul Pogba, Chris Paul, and Kim Kardashian, adding a touch of star power to the paddock.

In summary, the Singapore Grand Prix was a testament to Verstappen's tenacity, Ferrari's strategic gamble that went awry, and Antonelli's steady march toward the championship. With a few races left in the season, all eyes will be on the next round in the United States, where Antonelli could potentially clinch the title.
