2027 F1 Calendar: More Sprints, More Action

The 2027 Formula 1 season calendar has been announced, featuring an increase in Sprint events to 10 races. New Sprint venues include Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi.

The 2027 Formula 1 calendar is out, and it's clear that the Sprint format is here to stay, with the number of these shorter, more intense races increasing to 10. That's four more than in 2026, and it reflects the growing popularity among fans and organizers alike.

Why the increase? Well, data doesn't lie. Since the Sprint's introduction in 2021, there's been a 12% uptick in viewership during Sprint weekends compared to the standard ones. Fans seem to relish the additional competitive sessions, with Sprint Qualifying on Fridays proving three times more popular than the traditional practice sessions. Not to mention, 82% of those attending Sprint weekends feel they get more bang for their buck with action spread over three days.

F1 fans, a whopping 75% of them, believe Sprints add significant value to the season's calendar. It's no wonder then that the format has expanded from three events annually in the early years to a planned 10 for 2027.

New Venues for Sprint Races

Some circuits will experience the Sprint format for the first time in 2027. The season opener in Bahrain, the Australian Grand Prix, Japan, Monaco, and the finale in Abu Dhabi are all joining the party. Yes, you read that correctly — even Monaco, known for its tight and twisty circuit that makes traditional qualifying a nail-biter, will host a Sprint. Fans can now look forward to two thrilling sessions in the Principality.

The Usual Suspects

Among the returning venues, Canada will host a Sprint for the second year running, after a memorable duel between Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Silverstone, after hosting Sprints in 2021 and 2026, is back for another. Monza returns six years after its first Sprint, while Brazil, a Sprint stalwart, will host its sixth. Qatar's Lusail circuit also joins the list for the fourth time in five years.

With the season starting with Sprints in Bahrain, Australia, and Japan, teams will need to hit the ground running. It's a sprint in every sense, rewarding those who can quickly adapt to the high-stakes, high-reward format.

A Quick Refresher on Sprint Format

For those needing a reminder, a Sprint is essentially a short, sharp race of around 100km or about one-third the distance of a typical Grand Prix. Lasting roughly 30 minutes, there are no mandatory pit stops, though teams can pit if they fancy an experiment. Points are at stake for the top eight finishers, from eight points for the winner down to one for eighth place.

Sprint Qualifying, a condensed version of the main Qualifying session, kicks things off. SQ1 lasts 12 minutes, SQ2 for 10, and SQ3 wraps it up with a quick-fire 8-minute session. The reduction in practice sessions from three to one means more competitive action and less time for teams to dawdle.

Overall, the increase in Sprint events promises more excitement and unpredictability throughout the season. Whether you're a fan of the old guard or new to the sport, 2027 is shaping up to be a year where every race weekend could bring a fresh twist.
