Fernando Alonso discusses the evolution of Formula 1 engines, highlighting the shift from traditional V10s to hybrid systems. He stresses the need for balance as the FIA considers reintroducing V8 power by 2030.
Fernando Alonso, a veteran of Formula 1's varied engine eras, recently shared his thoughts on the sport's future power units. Reflecting on the old days of high-revving V10 engines, Alonso noted that while they were exhilarating to drive, times have indeed changed. "The world has changed," he remarked, suggesting that hybrid technology may be the path forward.
Alonso is uniquely positioned to comment, having driven cars powered by both V10 and V8 engines. With the FIA contemplating a return to V8 engines by 2030, Alonso emphasized the importance of finding the right balance between internal combustion and electric power. "We need to be happy and adapt to the world," he said, acknowledging the practicality of hybrid systems while pointing out the challenges of maintaining engine reliability over a season.
The push for a new engine formula comes as FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem seeks support from teams and manufacturers. His vision involves a 2030 introduction of V8 engines, aiming for reduced production costs and a lighter, more engaging ride for fans. Ben Sulayem highlighted the benefits, including a car approximately 80 kilograms lighter and a significant reduction in research and development costs. He also emphasized the importance of enhancing the sound experience at races, aiming for more than just noise but a true sensory enhancement.
As discussions continue, the balance between tradition and innovation remains at the forefront of F1's engine evolution. While Alonso and others reminisce about the roaring engines of the past, the future of Formula 1 engines will likely hinge on finding a harmonious blend of combustion and electric power.
